ÄTHER

Enstalasyon Tasarımı · Goethe-Institut, Galatasaray, İstanbul · 2020. Four site-specific works for the staircase niches of the Goethe-Institut in Galatasaray: fluorescent lights held in specimen bell jars, after the cabinets of curiosity of the Italian Renaissance. Site-Specific Light Installation, Goethe-Institut, Galatasaray, Istanbul. TUNK: İstanbul mimarlık, sergi tasarımı ve mekânsal enstalasyon stüdyosu.

Designed for the niches along the staircase of the Goethe-Institut building in Galatasaray, the four works of Äther take up the object and the acts of collecting, storing and preserving, after the cabinets of curiosity of the Italian Renaissance. Inside specimen bell jars, fluorescent lights take a different composition on each floor, arranged after the aesthetics of preservation spaces such as cabinets of curiosity and laboratories. The cabinet was made to hold the unique; the fluorescent tube is the most ordinary of industrial objects, and the installation sets the two against each other. Light, too, resists being kept. Instead of illuminating other objects, it shows itself, and because it passes through the glass, it is never truly stored. In one compartment the jars are filled with phosphor and glass powder, the materials fluorescent tubes are made from, and debris and defective tubes are shown alongside working ones, putting the nature and alteration of objects before any hierarchy of collectibles. Äther was the first installation of Curious Objects, the Goethe-Institut's 2020 exhibition series on the Wunderkammer curated by Ekmel Ertan. The work has since continued as a series of light pieces, shown again in Boşlukta Mevcut at Taksim Sanat in 2022 and made as editions with Adorno Design.
